UNIT 8

Sports are supposed to be a celebration of union among all the people. They are to be a celebration of peace and harmony. Nevertheles, this hasn’t been true in many aspects. Some sports became business, athletes became producs on sale and the primary aim of sports is lost.

Do you agree with this? What is your point of view?

We are a few months from the Olympic Games in Beijin, China and there’s been complaints against the violation of human rights in the country. This issue was supposed to be approached and the problem solved, but it hasn’t happened. Click here to watch a video in which Chinese woman talks about it.

Now… are sports really importat in our society? Why are they important? Click here to read someon’s answer and than you can post your asnwer on the site and comment here, in our blog.

Well… I’m sure you’ve got lots to think about, so let’s work.

Well Marcelo, I do think sports are not just important, but crucial to everybody. It’s article that sports are essential for body health, as a destresser, as a way of having a good time with your friends etc. But we can’t deny that is also a way of bringing union between the people. We can see in the movie “Pelé Eterno” a story that there was a war (don’t remember the country), some kind of a civil war and when Pelé went to this country the war stoped until he stayed there. And there was another exemple when the USA played a soccer game against Iran and they exchanged flowers as a peace treaty. So, I believe sports are marvelous to a lot of things. But we can say that nowadays sports are so much more business thing, but it’s just a awful thing compare to the advantage of sports.

You’re right, Luciano. Sports can sure teach people a lot, especially children. They are the ones who profit the most. It’s a shame sports are not seriously supported in our country. Well, I’m doing my best to teach my children to like sports.

Thanks for the post.

Marcelo.
